All you have to do is screw the bigger side onto your 15-20lb tank, screw on a small green 1lb bottle, turn the bigger tank upside down, give it about 15-30 seconds & then open the big tank valve.
When the hissing stops completely - it’s full. Close the big tank valve, turn over the big tank & unscrew the small tank.
Notes:
-Have your 1lb tank in your food freezer for 10-20min before beginning this process. Propane likes to move from warm to COLD environments.
-as you unscrew the little tank, use 2 hands. 1 on the tank, 1 on the adapter(to hold it steady from turning). After you’ve got the little tank unscrewed about 2-3 rounds, remove your hand off the adapter because freezing propane will shoot out that direction as the disconnection is made.
-always place your plastic caps back onto the little tanks. Those caps don’t keep the gas in, but rather protect the threads of those bottles.
-i prop my 15-20lb tank upside down before even screwing on the little tank. It gives it plenty of time for the liquid to move to the bottom.
-if you finish filling a little 1lb tank, have it unscrewed & hear it hissing a tiny bit, place your thumb over the opening for a couple seconds to see if it’s just a valve reset or if it’s defective. If you remove your thumb & the hissing continues - set that 1lb somewhere far away from your house doors & windows outside. That 1lb tank is now unusable by us(the non-professional).
Anyhow. Cool adapter that really saves a LOT of money in the wintertime.
Good thing I was learning about gas in chemistry class when I got this, otherwise I would have been disappointed. Also, I found that there are a few videos on youtube on how to get the best results. For me, you have to use this to release some gas from the 1lb bottle till the bottle itself gets pretty chilly. Make sure the bottle is standing up straight so you release as much "gaseous" gas as possible. After that, fill it from the 20lb bottle ASAP. Keep repeating this till your bottle is full, for me it usually takes 4 cycles of this till its completely full.

I successfully refilled 4 of the 1lb green propane bottles with this adapter. Please note that your 1lb bottle will probably need to be filled twice before it becomes 100% full. Watch a few YouTube videos for more information.
I replaced my old refill valve with this one and am very happy with it. The quick attachment design eliminates the need for a wrench and makes filling 1lb.
